When is a burp not a burp?

When, apparently, it is a heart attack. Yes really, no i am not kidding. My Hubby returned from 2 days playing golf with a friend having bad indigestion and non stop burping – y’know like when you have gulped down a fizzy drink too fast and cant stop cos all the gas just keeps coming back. Jeez was I getting fed up with the burp monster wandering around the house all evening – although 7yo daughter thought it funny her dad was doing stuff she gets told off for.

So in the end we get a bit concerned, the “indigestion” is not easing and hes very hot and sweaty – but its a hot evening, hes been staying up late and eating badly because hes been with mates. He gets a cab to the nearest Hospital to be on the safe side, phones me later to say for me to go to bed as hes going to be monitored for a bit as his blood pressure is a bit high.

So next morning I am on the school run and get a text from the husband “Heart attack confirmed, can you cancel my 4pm dentist appointment?”  WHAAAAAATT!!  IT WAS ONLY TRAPPED WIND!!!!  Ok, ok stay calm for kids, realise daughter’s lunch box is still at home when we are outside school and then try to take a child to pre school who does not need to be there till after lunch so i am obviously not coping as well as i thought….calm down, he’s in the best place. get to children’s centre for drop in group , everyone says the usual “how’s things?” I stammer ” erm erm, husbands had a heart attack” collective room of childminders going WHAAAAAAT!!  I am offered a cup of tea to which i say yes and try to drink, although it was stewed and i prefer coffee…

Don’t remember much of rest of day apart from alot of people phoning and texting, the horror of having to tell beloved daughter and holding her till she stopped sobbing – her saying to me “I dont want my first funeral to be my daddy’s” and the relief of seeing husband, wired up to machines but alive and well – erm ok post heart attack well but according to the medics he came in at the right time if that makes sense.

I have learnt an awful lot about heart attacks in the last 48 hours, the most interesting thing being that no heart attack is the same and pretty much no heart attack is like what we see on TV – someone clutching their chest and falling to the ground. many people die needlessly because they do not realise the symptoms they are having should be checked out as a possible heart attack – by chance the British Heart Foundation have launched a new website trying to get this message across; so in homage to the bizarre and unlikely  symptoms displayed by my husband - currently recuperating on a coronary care ward, had with his heart attack, I have posted the link below – please watch the video, (the interactive one is best) its not pleasant but it might save someones life. yx

  1. What a shock for you!! Thank goodness he had the sense to go to the hospital! My husband would have just gone to bed. This is my biggest fear for him, so I’ve sent him an email to watch the video. Hopefully we’ll both know when it’s time to get help. Thanks for linking to it.
I hope your husband is doing well and will be home soon. Take care of yourself, too!

  2. How frightening for you all. I hope he’s got the all-clear now, although I don’t know how that works. My dad had one and it wasn’t immediately obvious that it was a heart attack either.
